Past Warm and Fuzzy Stories
A tiny piglet has been named Tetley at a Devon farm as he's no bigger than a cup of tea. Tetley was the smallest of a litter of eight Pennywell miniatures born to his mother, Poppy Two Socks, at Pennywell Farm, near Buckfastleigh in Devon.Pennywell owner Chris Murray said "Tetley is the star of the farmyard." Staff had to get through several false pregnancies before the brood came along - but are overjoyed with their 3in-high, 5in-long mini star of the pig pen.
Old English strains are used to breed the Pennywell miniature pigs, which never grow beyond the size of a cocker spaniel. Most of the litter will be sold as pets with the rest being kept for future breeding.

But Alex the African grey parrot had been in school for three decades, tutored by a special tutor and her team. And what a student he was! His amazing learning capabilities not only established him as the world's most famous talking bird, it also made his teacher, Dr. Irene Pepperberg, associate professor of psychology at Brandeis University, Massachusetts, acknowledged authority on avian learning.
In 1977, she bought Alex. The grey parrot is known for his human like vocalizations - more so than any other breed of parrot. In a matter of years, the teacher and pupil together shattered the concept that parrots simply mimicked what they heard. By using new teaching techniques, Alex eventually learned how to express his emotions and string together short sentences. An important off shoot of the Alex experiments has been that the methods used to teach him numbers are now being successfully modified to teach children with learning disabilities.
On Thursday September 6th, Dr Pepperberg put Alex in his cage for the night. He looked at her and said. "you be good, see you tomorrow. I love you." He passed away that night at the age of 31. The Alex Foundation is a non-profit foundation that strives to protect parrots in captivity, and preserve those in the wild.
